Did you change your spring break plans because of the virus? From what to what?
I was planning on going to Barcelona, Spain to visit my brother who was studying abroad. It was going to be my family's first time in Europe. He had to come home and we were unable to go anywhere.
How did you feel when you were informed the remainder of the semester would be held online?
I was angry at first because at the time I did not realize how serious social distancing was in order to decrease spreading of the virus. I was then just sad and quite numb for days afterwards, because of all the experiences at Conn I would be missing out on.
Where are you living for the rest of the semester? How did you feel about leaving campus? Or what's it like remaining on campus?
I am at home, doing online classes in my childhood bedroom. Leaving campus was really difficult because I knew it meant a loss of my freedom that Conn provides that I do not get at home.
What has been your experience with moving classes online? What's good? What's not so good?
It has been really odd to do online classes. At first, participating was hard, because it is harder to tell when students want to participate and conversations just do not seem to flow as easily. I do enjoy seeing everyone's faces again, although it is on my laptop screen.
How has the virus (and the precautions taken to prevent it spreading) impacted your daily life?
I am someone who loves being around people, and I sort of shut down when I spend too much time alone. I find that emotionally, it is hard to deal with being so isolated from family and friends. I am also in constant worry that someone in my family will get the virus.
How worried are you about getting the virus?
I am pretty worried. Although I have been social distancing, my mom still has to go to work because she is an "essential worker" so it is hard to be completely safe from it.
Do you know anyone who has gotten COVID-19?
Yes, a distant cousin of mine and two family friends have the virus.
Are you staying in? What are you doing to pass the time?
Yes, quite honestly schoolwork has provided a nice distraction from thinking about the virus.
Are you going out? Where do you go and what is it like?
I don't go anywhere. Sometimes, I go for a walk around my neighborhood and I have noticed a lot of people go on walks everyday, much more than they did before the virus.
What is giving you hope and/or strength right now?
I have hope for warm weather to come, because it always lifts my spirits to be outside in the sun. I am also hoping that we can go back to school in the fall.
